Hi guys.
This is my first year with my Pearson and in fact with a inboard engine.
When you start youre engine, Do you turn the 'ignition' key off after or do you leave it at the start position?
Then, when sailing, do you put the transmission in neutral or leave it in foward?

Normally, the key would be left in the on position. Assume you have a diesel with a pull out cut off or a cut off solenoid switch to stop the engine that allows the engine to run with the key turned off. If you turn the key off, the warning lights and buzzers won't work. You could have an embarassing silent melt down of the engine with the key in the off position.
As far as the second question, it depends. It's the transmission that's effected by the prop spinning. Some transmissions can freewheel without damage. Others require putting the transmission in gear, usually in reverse. Others need a separate shaft brake to keep the prop from freewheeling. You need to check the manual for your particular transmission. If you could tell us the make and model of your engine, perhaps someone with an identical set up could tell you.
Another factor with the prop is whether it causes more drag rotating or locked in position. For theP35, believe it's best locked in position because of it's sheltered position at the end of the fixed keel. A strut hung prop free of any deadwood on a fin keel boat may be better if left to free wheel.

Hi Peter. My engine is a Westerbeke 30hp and I think the transmission would be a Hurt. Early in this season, I was going in foward gear. Then a fellow sailor told me I should put it in neutral since when it is 'in gear' the transmission turn, and he assume the engine would also turn.
I know very little. So I am seeking advice from the Pearson community.
I am worried I could have mecanical problems down the road. So tell me what are you doing when you are sailing. Foward, neutral or reverse?

I'm pretty sure the manual for hurth says neutral or reverse I'll recheck it when i get home in a few days

Can't help you with the Hurth, I have a Yanmar. Some transmissions can be damaged by a freewheeling prop, don't know which one, however. If you don't have a manual for yours, try googling for the MFG/US Distributor. Most of them have their manuals on line.

When rebuilding the hurth on my boat I found it is totally mechanical ,working on centrifugal force. A clutch pack between the input shaft and primary output shaft is engaged when the input shaft spins slinging 3 steel balls up a ramp and applying pressure on the clutch pack Without the input spinning the clutch pack is free to spin However when in neutral the pack don't spin removing all drag from the transmission. So does that mean that in neutral, the rotation of propeller will not damage the tranny or the engine?

As long as the fluid level is acceptable neutral will damage nothing in the transmission . It is passable to use the prop to turn an alternator to charge your batteries. Roscoe
