I have a 1978 Pearson 35 #364 My centerboard cable parted when an enthusiastic crew member hauled on it hard. I have followed the various advices through this medium, but can not thread the cable between pipe and over sheaves to centerboard casing. I think there is some rusted cable stuck over the sheave and blocking my attempts to thread it through. Any suggestions on how I might clear the cable out of the pipe and sheave with out hauling the boat, and even if I haul it are there any suggestions as to how I could clear it with out opening the whole area.

Without seeing the problem this is only speculation.however I feel you will need to put the boat on the hard and start from the board up. in any case you have a job on your hands. This is an area owners should give more attention to rather than out of site out of mind..Barnicals has presented problems in this area. Roscoe 863 858 6249

I got mine through with no messenger line. I started from the top, it got down to the last turn at the keel. I could see it, but could not reach it. . I pulled it out and wrapped the raw end with teflon tape, and secured that with one round of electoral tape. Sprayed about 1/2 can of chain lube in the tube. While feeding it in I was constantly turning the cable. It finally popped out. Maybe just luck. If I remember right it was about 16 ft long. Allow more than that for the rounds on the winch. This is a lift out job because you have to nicro press the cable at the keel. Dont scrimp on the quality of the cable or fittings for this, get the best cable you can find.

Well Lance, you are dealing with one of the problems associated with the P35. The centerboard works well when the cable is well lubricated. I have found spraying a lub down the tube once a year or more often if you live in FL, helps a great deal. Don't dump enough in there to see it in the water but make sure it makes it through the tube. I agree with Roscoe, haul that boat out and work the tube. Don't open it up if you can help it at all. Major work there. If you can just get anything through there to tie to a cable to then you can use the cable to work the whole tube. You have access to a lot pros on the P35 and some that have replaced the tubing itself. Haul it out, get a good dog to keep you company and work on that cable. If the board is in the down position with a broken cable....run a line between the two winches and under the boat. Slide it back from the bow until it's under the center board and winch it up using both winches. Keep us posted. Harris www.pearson35.com
