I am considering replacing my Westerbeke 30. While most of the current wisdom suggests an engine in the 25 HP range, several recommendations have been made for an engine in the 33 - 35 Hp range for use in head seas. While I currently cruise at hull speed at 2300 rpm, my speed dpes drop down very quickly in seas. Does anyone have any experience with these higher power engines on the P-35?

After 3-1/2 years this is still a good question. I may be repowering Hull 29 in the future and would like to know what hp is best.

My input...go with Beta Marine. Call the guy in South Carolina and talk with him. He has done three P35 by now. Only way to go.

I went with the Yanmar 39 HP. I was taught one HP per foot or 3 HP per 1000 lbs. For running arround on average 39 hp is way more than you need, but when I was in weather off of Cape Fear I was very glad to have the power. Bill

I have a 3GM30F Yanmar on my hull number 191 Invictus. Works great in all weather conditions especially near the Skyway Bridge channel in Tampa bay when the current and chop becomes challenging. When talking about horsepower don't forget to match the prop with the engine.
