Hello All!
I am the proud new owner of Lalique, a 69 p35. It has a locked up yanmar 3 gm 27. Any advice I get will be greatly appreciated. I have a good bit of mechanical skill, and can do rough carpentry. I will be living on my boat within a year and seeing where it will take me.

If locked up means you cannot turn the shaft with a big wrench (witch I had a previous boat), I pulled the engine and delivered it to my mechanic's shop (his recommendation) to cut the cost considerably. Shop rates are much less than in-oat rates. rayschmidt41@verizon.net

I pulled the Yanmar in my boat by myself last year to install it properly. Was surprizingly easy to do with a come along and a 4x4 across the companionway. You can manhandle the engine once it's sitting on the cabin sole. Will take two people to put it back in.
Didn't pull the engine out of the boat but suspect it would be relatively easy to do using the main boom. I'd first partially disassemble the engine pulling the head and removing the transmission. Would probably get the weight to a couple hundred pounds that your local friendly hired gorilla could even carry out under his arm.

First thing you need to do is pull the head. Soak the pistons in Kroil, Marvel Mystery oil, etc. for a couple of days. Then tap the pistons using a block of wood and a big hammer. You might get lucky and that will be all that you need to do if the bores aren't pitted by corrosion.

Repowering my P35 with new Yanmar 3GM30. this will replace the Westerbeke 30. The thre blade prop is 16" with a 10 pitch. I would very much appreciate learning from anyone who has made this repower as to the transmission ratio and prop used. Thank you very much. This is my first entry on the forum...so hello to everyone and thanks for making so much valuable information available, Mike

The Yanmar is not a drop in replacement in the early P35s with factory installed A4 engine beds. On my '69, had to make a mount bracket that bolted into factory drilled and tapped holes on the port side of the block.. The stock aft port mount bracket moved to the stbd side and installed backwards. Switched to much smaller after market motor mounts. Even with doing all that, the engine still sticks a few inches into the galley. Moved the face of the galley out 3" so the engine would fit inside the cabinet. Doubt you'd be able to get a 3GM in the stock engine space even if you totally redid the engine beds.
The Yanmar came with at least two gear ratios in the transmission. Mine had the lower number/higher ratio, something like 2:1, gearing. A 13/12 three blade prop worked fine with that gear ratio. If you have the higher number/lower ratio gearing, you'll be able to spin a more aggressive prop {larger diameter and/or pitch).

ROVERHI, Thanks very much for info on your engine replacement experience. The original engine was a westerbeke 30...hoping we can construct a new engine mount and attach to the original. Your info on the gear ration is also very helpful...THANKS ! I don't know how much difference there is but the current nomenclature for the Yanmar engine I plan to install is the 3YM30 (29 mhp). Anyone else with experience with the Yanmar GM or 3YM30 installation and/or related transmission/prop experience? Thanks for any and all information! Has anyone replaced the Westerbeke 30 with a Yanmar 3GM?
