This may be difficult to describe but can anyone tell me how much vibration is acceptable. My boat has a Universal Diesel engine. we get some vibration when motoring but also some when sailing at around 6knots or over with transmission in neutral. I want to make sure my propeller shaft is aligned properly but don't want to mess with it if some vibration is normal.

If it has a hurth transmission (it probably does), you are probably feeling the cavitation from the prop. Have the same on mine at similar speeds. My owners manual says you should never sail with it in the direction of travel, but that neutral (or zero position as they put it) should be fine. Leaving it in forward will grind it up, however. The vibration while under power may be your mounts if your shaft is ok.

Thank you, Yes it is a hurth transmission and I always have it in neutral when sailing. The mounts seem to be ok but the previous owner told me he was considering changing them because of their age. There seem to be a lot of opinions on how to align the prop shaft. If I change the mounts I will definitely have to do that.

I'd have to say that some vibration is normal, but hard to say how much is too much unless you're on it at the time. Had to realign my shaft due to a prop change and didn't notice any difference.
