My rigger has recommend replacing the centerboard cable with vectran. Has anybody tried this and was it successful? Has anybody else used something other than stainless steel cable? My rigger uses a solid sailmaker stainless thimble and vectran when replacing cables on all Hinckleys and he claims it last longer.

Vectran or other new low stretch fibers should work great as long as there is nothing in the cable run that will cut the cable. That may be a problem as the stainless cable may have gouged the pulleys and cable run tubing. You probably wouldn't find out without trying it. Personally, I'd do it as the synthetic won't have the electolysis problems which are most likely the cause of failure on almost all centerboard cables. Even if the cable run is rough, you may get more life out of the synthetic.

Switched my cable to Dyneema/Vectran. Only issue is the splice tail bury is quite long and jams up in the sheave box. That does 't allow the board to go all the way into the trunk. Doesn't effect dropping and raising the board except leaves a few inches of the board hanging down below the keel. Doesn't seem to be an issue unless there is significant chafe where it jams in the sheave box. Hasn't been a problem in nearly a year of limited sailing.
Fwiw, the metal cable was galvanized steel and in good condition after 6 years in service.

I just replaced the centerboard cable with 6mm dyneema single braid. I tied it to the pin using an anchor bend so I would not have the splice thickness extend into the tube. I would rate this as a very good repair with no doubts that the board comes all the way up with an audible verification "clunk".
