Not specifically Sailomat but had problems with a Monitor. The vane wouldn't steer the boat below about 4 knots of boat speed. Just not enough water pressure in the vane rudder to move the wheel and steer the boat. The PO had installed the vane and there were a lot of turns in the control lines to the wheel which I thought was the reason for the slow speed failure of the vane. Worked okay above that speed though used it very little. Had the good fortune to buy a used WindPilot Pacific Plus auxiliary rudder vane which bypassed the wheel steering so sold the Monitor. When I tore out the wheel found that one of the idler sheaves in the steering was frozen and didn't rotate. That may have been the cause of the Monitors not working below 4 knots. The steering was very free at the dock and didn't require a lot of pressure at slow speeds. Steering pressure on the wheel increased greatly at speed but didn't favor one side over the other. Might want to carefully check the nearly inaccessible sheaves in the cable steering system to see if they are still working as designed.
I bought a used Sailomat 601 vane before the WPP Plus turned up because of reputation for high torque reputation which I hoped would solve the slow speed issues of the monitor but never installed it.
If the vane doesn't work with the wheel steering, might consider ditching the wheel and going with a tiller. Pendulum Servo Vanes work way better with a tiller which doesn't have the friction and inertia of the wheel and larger rudder deflection. Cost me a boat unit to do the conversion though most of that was the Edson rudder head casting. Wished I'd done it as soon as I bought the boat.
