I have a P35, 1978 which I recently purchased. It is in excellent condition. One item on my project list for her is to remove the engine (720 original hr's.) and paint the engine and paint the engine cavity. My friend says while I have it out I should put a New Beta 27 hp in it. My Westerbeke 30 runs great and came with a new oil cooler and Heat exchanger, new engine mounts, new 18 gal fuel tank, new coupler, new stainless shaft, and cutlass bearing. It's four cylinders and runs clean. I have no plans to ever sell the boat. Is there any advantage to the New Beta besides easy service ability at this time in the program? I realize cost is a negative to the Beta. My opinon is that the Westerbeke is a strong well built engine that can go the distance and I can get parts for it. Only big advange to the Beta is weight. I like the current engine with four cylinders rather than the three in the Beta. Thanks for your opinion, Willy

Willy If it aint broke don't fix it !! Clean the ares with de-greaser ,water, and a wet-dry vac Removeing the engine to paint is a lot of work for little rewards. Spend that time sailing

Paint the engine, in stages if necessary, in place.I paint sections of my 82 atomic bomb as they become the object of repair or matenance.I pulled the starter and alternator for rebuild one year and painted the block underneath before re-installing the freshly painted rebuilds. After fuel related stalling problems I painted the exposed block while the carborator and fuel pump were being refurbished.Likewise the top of the tranny and rear part of the block when I had to re-do the exhaust plumbing.Of course the atomic 4 leaves a lot more room around it than the westerbeke.I agree with Roscoe.Pulling the engine just to paint it is a lot of work.Larry

I pulled my W30, cleaned, resealed and painted it. It was a lot of work but worth it. I was also able to clean up a lot of old wiring with the engine out of the way. Incidently, my engine has over 3600 hours on it and still running fine. I would love a new Beta but this works fine for the price.
