I am re powering Pearson35 and plan on installing a Beta 25 in her (Hull #405). I have been coming to this site for a few months now and have noticed that Beta Marine gets all the attention. What is the problem with Yanmar. Its not an engine that was designed for a tractor or a sawmill but specifically for marine use with consistent oil distribution relative to its orientation to gravity. Why doesn't this site give it alittle more credit? Willy.

Willie I can only speak for myself as to why I chose Beta over Yanmar. I own a kubota diesel tractor for 12 years and have had no problems at all with it so I was leaning toward it from the start..I then went to a boat show and talked to Reps of both engines and was most impressed with the answers I got from Stanley with Beta marine. The torresen website might have opinions as to choosing engines. Since I have not owned a Yanmar I can say nothing negative about them.Be sure to check the pros and cons of both before making a choice. Good luck Roscoe

One of the things that helped me decide on Beta over yanmar was how noisy the yanmar is in the two launches that my marina uses to service moorings. Significantly noisier than the Westerbekes they replaced. I used the 28 hp BD1005 in my P35 and am extremely satisfied.Did the job myself during the winter of 2005 and cant say enough good about the engine. I am sure that the 25 will work ok but I really like the 28. Total repower including new prop and shaft used a 2.5:1 reduction and a 16x11 3 blade prop. the boat cruises at 6.25 kts @ 2200 rpm. Good Luck Jack

I've got a Yanmar 3gm in my boat. With the stock Yanmar engine mounts, the aft mount will not allow the engine to be slid back to fit in the stock location. To fit the stock mounts, engine must be moved approximately forward into the cabin area. It's primarily the ancillaries that are sticking out so it's not too big an intrusion but still a pain. If you want to put a Yanmar in, custom aft engine mounts will have to be fabricated. That would be enough to rule out a Yanmar. Incidentally, this doesn't seem to be a problem unique to Yanmar's as there is a picture of another engine with the same problem in the projects section.
Other than the above, the Yanmar is a good engine. Will push the boat over 6 knots and loafs at 5 knots. Noise is surprizingly low considering the uninsulated engine compartment with plenty of pukas for noise to escape. The engine runs very smooth with a 3 blade prop. Will be switching over to a 2 blade prop to improve sailing performance. Will see how that works out.
