I have a problem with the batens hanging on the topping lift for the boom when I tack the boat. It happens almost every time even when I slack the topping lift and it's starting to wear the sail. I really don't want to have the mainsail recut and was wondering if anyone else had this problem. I've considered adding something to the end of the boom to move the topping lift back a few inches but I'm not sure what and I guess it would be ugly anyway. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I guess expense would play a part. A rigid vang would be a 3rd choice. Of the 2 listed I would recut sail, I guess.

Three suggestions: 1. There is an inexpensive vang called a boomkicker that might work in holding the boom up without a topping lift. I've e-mailed the company and they have provided them to P-35 owners. 2. Put a quick release arrangement on the topping lift. After hosting the main remove the topping lift and attach it to the backstay. DON'T forget to reattach before lowering the sail. 3. I have a small three part adjustable line adjuster attached to the topping lift. Before lifting the mainsail we loosen the attachment which lengthens the topping lift. The topping lift remains attached to the boom but it is two or three feet longer. occasionally it will hook-up on the top batten however, by adding a little additional slack it will stay clear of the battens. After folding the main we shorten the topping lift and reattach the boom to the back stay clip. I would not mess with recutting the sail. It would likely cost more than any of the three suggestions above and would reduce the mains area.
