Hi all, I bought 1969 hull #149 last summer and I love her. However, I always wanted a yawl since sailing on one many years ago. At the time I bought Fret Knot, I saw another P35 that was yawl rigged but was twice the price I paid for my sloop, and mine was in better condition. I have absolutely no regrets about the decision to buy the sloop, but I am wondering about the possibility of maybe converting her to a yawl someday. I realize that it might be costly but I am thinking that it might be something I would want to consider since I think I will keep her for a very long time, and buying another yawl would probably cost me even more since not very many are around in good condition and affordable. I would love to hear any thoughts about this, what it would entail, cost estimates, opinions, etc. Especially from any yawl rig P35 owners!
Happy sailing, Jim

Having looked at several yawls in the area, I've often though of doing a conversion myself. I don't believe it would be too hard or costly.
Move the backstay forward to the backside of the thingypit seat. Move the traveler forward 4 or 5 inches. Strengther the thingypit floor. Mount a used mast from a 20 foot daysailer (you would need running backstays). Find a short boom and small main.
Could be done for less than $1000, depending on how much you had to give for the used mast
I could send pics of a yawl in my area if it would help

Hi. I have 1969 hull # 81 yawl rigged P35. I own the boat about 8 years and use it a lot. Bahamas 4 times, Abaco racing week, and a lot of racing and cruising locally in Jacksonville FL. I would not ever consider to convert the sloop to yawl. Shortly after I bought the boat, I had to replace standing rigging on mizzen and when I took it down I did not want to really it put back. If I would not have new hardware and sail I would convert to sloop. 9 ft thingypit suddenly became very comfortable without all the shrouds. Access to stern of the boat opened up. You can have nice canopy on sloop. As for sailing performance I never found any difference in speed to have mizzen sail up or down. On the other hand, I got radar on it, thingypit light. sun shover and such. I may consider to have another sail made for it to give it one more chance. The yawl also have a lot more character especially if you have nice size of nation flag sewn on the sail. I do have original sail plans prints for yawl so if really want to do it , they are available. Check CAPER on website. Peter
