Replaced cable in my 35 by water floating a piece of string down the tube, attaching the new cable and pulling it back through the tube. Worked like a charm.

I tried butting the end of the old cable to the new cable, tapinig them together and pulling up the new cable from below. Could not pull through the first sheave. Ended up tying a small stainless steel "messenger" wire to the old cable and pulling it through. Once through, attached new cable and it pulled rather easily.

Does anyone know how Mary Downing "water floated" a piece of string down the tube?

My guess is by pouring water down the pipe and a bead on fish line, a large enough bead for the water to pull, but small enough so as not get caught anywhere,

I'm in the process of replacing a centerboard cable, in the water, in the bahamas - I just wanted to share my experience in case someone encounter a similar situation. The cable crimp corroded away while under sail and luckily in deep water, we heard a loud noise and it became clear that the centerboard deployed itself.
We ended pulling the original cable through the conduit to inspect it. In retrospect it was a big mistake as now we have to feed a new lead cable through
We did not have any scuba gear, just our snorkeling gear.
We anchored in a deep enough water ( 9feet ) so that I could dive and with my feet on the ground push the centerboard up and pass a line below the centerboard so that someone on deck could raise it up. We added a second line for safety around the centerboard and the companionway.
We now needed to source a cable, a new thimble and find a way to crimp it. I called a few marine store in Nassau and in Spanish wells and it soon became clear that it would be impossible to find wire rope and and a stainless steel crimp in our Area (Rock sound, Eleuthera).
We met someone that was flying back and forth to Fort Lauderdale so I called West Marine in Fort Lauderdale to have them build the cable so that he could pick it up.
Last step was to get a new lead through both sheave boxes, we tried a few different thing and after a lot of frustration and stress we managed to get the old cable to go all the way through.
Here is how we did it,
- Strip the end of wire from the outer strands in order to get about 2/3 of a foot single strand stainless wire, - push the thin wire through the galley counter top as far as possible - Coil the rest of the wire in a loop in order to make a handle - Use the handle to "screw" the wiire in. It took a few trials, try to push the wire down as you rotatre the handle. - Voila!
Next steps are to wait or the spare cable, connect it to the lead, connect it to the centerboard pin and pull it up trough the conduits - hopefully this should be easy.
We also used the internet wayback machine to access the old version of pearson35.com in order to see how others have done it.
In insight getting West Marine to build a spare cable is so easy that I think that you should always carry one at all times!

My cable parted a couple of days ago we will be dragging the deep draft until fixed. In reading the posts I’ve come to the conclusion that replacing the wire rope with dyneema is a good way to go. I read that the splice causes the board to not go up all the way, so one poster suggested using a knot instead. I was leaning towards an anchor bend and maybe 1/4” dyneema braid. Comments?
