We were sailing this past Sunday and doing about 5 kts when we suddenly slowed down to 2 or 2.5 knts and the breeze was just the same. Boats were passing us and we couldn't figure out why we had lost speed. We were in 45 feet of water and we tried to raise the centerboard but found it was stuck. We exposed the cable on the reel and it seemed fine. We came about and after that the board came free. I noticed a lobster buoy right next to our hull (which I had not seen before) and I also noticed a long piece of kelp floating close by. My question is would it be possible to tangle a lobster pot line with the center board and then have the line block the trunk to keep the board form being raised? Has anyone had an experience like this? What troubleshooting should we follow. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Boats were passing us and we couldn't figure out why we had lost speed. We were in 45 feet (I only wish) of water and we tried to raise the centerboard but found it was stuck. We exposed the cable on the reel and it seemed fine. (Does this mean that it was working and pulling up the cb?) We came about and after that the board came free. I noticed a lobster buoy right next to our hull (which I had not seen before) and I also noticed a long piece of kelp floating close by. My question is would it be possible to tangle a lobster pot line with the center board and then have the line block the trunk to keep the board form being raised? (Yep, you bet. The line, lobster buoy and the kelp all could press against the board and hold it in place. Tendency would be to continue to pull / crank away and break the wire.) Has anyone had an experience like this? What troubleshooting should we follow. Any help is appreciated. Thanks (I would raise the board a few times 5x and see if it was binding or the cable was damaged. Poor some oil in the tube - not too much don't want it to drain down to the water - just to lube the blocks in the tube junctions, then check it on the next haul out.)

Thanks you for your reply. The cable did still raise and lower the board after it was freed up. We did not force the cable so it did not break thankfully. I think we will replace it at the next haul out anyway as it has shown some signs of barbs starting. I appreciate your reply. I always thought that a lobster pot would just cause the board to push up into the trunk and we would sail merrily along. This time it really does seem that we were dragging it along. One other question is " would barnacles in the trunk cause this same symptom"? The yard where we keep the boat has not been good about power washing the board or the trunk and we have not been able to apply new bottom paint for several years. Thanks again.
