I *suspect* this is not going to get the answer I want, but... Has anyone ever removed the Hurth HBW from the back of a Westerbeke 30 in a P35? I can uncouple the prop shaft and remove three of the four mounting plate bolts, but the fourth looks like I need to remove the starter motor and one if the engine mounts. I really don't want to have to pull the engine just to replace a single thrust washer grrrrr..... J

Are you breaking it at the bellhousing or mounting plate?I have one on the floor that all was needed was to remove the bolts in the plate. Roscoe

Yeah - mounting plate. Three of the bolts are easily (!) accessible. The fourth (lower right) is very out of the way - it's behind the body of the gearbox so there's no route for a socket, and behind the starter motor so no room to swing a spanner (wrench). Looks like I have to remove one of the engine mounts, and then the starter motor, to get at it. The ZF manual shows six mounting plate bolts, but the HBW has four. Looking forward to a cold rainy saturday lying upside down in a *pit locker... J

The answer is yes - you *can* remove the gearbox without removing the engine, but sheesh...
9/16" or 14mm crowsfoot spanner can crack the bolt, then a ground down ring spanner can loosen it enough to get it our by finger power.
But watch out, you need to remove the aft starboard engine mount, and the engine settles on the other three. I'm going to have to lift it 4-5mm to get the mount bracket (that sits over the starter motor) to fit back on, and then drop it back into its original position.
