The P35 has some kind of gasket material between the deck and the stanchion base. Does anyone know what this material is and if it really needs to be there? I am going to rebed my stanchions and repair some stress crazing. On my prior vessel, the stanchions were mounted directly.
Advise and opinions welcomed!

Number 108 did not have anything under the stanchions except caulk. There was a fiberglass backing plate inside the hull. Pulleed all the stanchions, threw away the fiberglass backing and replaced with 1/4" aluminum. If any of the fasteners went through cored area of deck, routed out the core, filled with epoxy thickened with West Systems #4 thickener and redrilled the holes. Bedded the stanchions with butyl. Because of the torqueing that stanchions get, butyl is the best sealant. Someone cut pads slightly larger than the stanchion bases from fiberglass sheets and epoxied them to the deck under the stanchions. The pads spread the load over a larger area. Wouldn't hurt though don't know that it's necessary. If you want to do that, you can buy the FRP sheets from McMaster Carr. www.mcmaster.com/#standard-plastic-sheets/=qwvbzh
