Has anybody removed old and then installed new cutlass bearing without having to pull shaft? Considering installing new cutlass bearing and looking for thoughts and experience with this process.

Yes just finished it. What I did was by using a small pipe wrench and vice grips I grabbed on the exposed bearing end. There was a little less than an eighth of an inch sticking out. I wiggled it until it started to move being careful not to destroy the exposed portion. Then once I was able to rotate it a quarter of an inch or so I drilled holes in the bearing through the set screw holes ,being careful not to hit the prop shaft. Then I stuck an Awl in the hole and while rotating the bearing I gently pried it outwards. I had the thing out in less than an hour. This was the original bearing on a 1976 pearson 35.It was in there pretty good and basically came down to finding a wrench with a good design that could grip the small exposed portion.
