Why not a tiller?? I'm researching my next boat and have settled on a shallow draft 34'-36' moderately heavy displacement sloop. The problem is I HATE wheels, a d**ned yuppie invention!!!
Haven't seen a Pearson 35 listed without a wheel. Do they exist?? If not, is it reasonably possible to convert a wheeled boat to a tiller?? Some boats are set up to just put on a tiller head and you are off. Others like the Tartan 37 have the rudder stock coming up in the lazarette and would be too costly in safety, lost storage and hassle to convert. Can someone give me an idea what it would take to get simple, straight forward, intuitive, energy saving steering on a P35.
I'm out here in the middle of the pacific so can't go down to my local marina and find a P35 to inspect.
Aloha Peter O.

The rudder is connected to a shaft with a 1" square end that I made an emergency tiller to fit. all that is needed is to remove the inspection cover in the sole of the coc pit and atach the tiller, no problem. Roscoe

Is the puka where the emergency tiller attaches water tight. Otherwise, is the shaft sealed at the thingypit sole. Some of these emergancy tiller attachments are merely a hole that allow access to the rudderstock for the emergency tiller but also allow any water in the thingypit to flood into the hull.

Since I would be useing it as an emergency tiller only I saw no reason to make it waterproof However I'm sure it coul be made waterproof if a tiller was the primary steering mechanisum Tho few and far between I have seen P35s with tillers as the only steering mechanisum. However I paid no attention as to how the deck was sealed. There is one Pearson 35 with "factory" tiller steering. Vagabond is located in South Florida. She sails very well and weather helm really only presents itself in a good puff. Otherwise with proper trim a very neutral helm.

Coverted my boat to tiller steering. Used a length of bronze 1 1/2" ID by 2 1/8" OD hollow rod. It didn't quite fit over the 1 1/2" rudder stock so had to have it machined to fit. Bought a stub piece of 1 1/2" bronze rod to extend the rudder shaft above the thingypit sole and had the other end of the hollow rod machined to fit that. Bought a 2" high by 6" square block of slippery plastic and had 1 1/2" hole bored into it at the angle of the shaft. Bolted that to thingypit sole to act as a bearing for the extended rudder shaft and to cover the Puka for the old emergency tiller access. Bought the same tiller head from Edson as SailingWhimsy.com which was the most expensive part of the conversion. Had a tiller made by www.idahosail.com/RC%20store.htm for something less than $200. I grew to despise the wheel on my P-35 and wish I'd converted to a tiller the day I bought the boat. Way easier to control the boat in close quarters and reverse. It does take a bit of muscle to over powerr the weather helm but that just encourages me to properly trim the sails.
