Having owned 2 Pearson 35s, I have collected a lot of "good stuff" other owners may be interested in. E-mail "spot476@yahoo.com" for list and details

HOWDY; I'M LOOKING FOR A RUDDER POST FITTING TO FIT A PERMANENT TILLER TO. IN THE EARLY BROCHURES THE P35 WAS SHOWN WITH ONLY A TILLER AN I WOULD LIKE TO REMOVE THE WHEEL ON MY '73 AN GO WITH JUST THE TILLER. MY EDSON WHEEL AND GEAR ARE IN GREAT SHAPE SO IF ANY ONE IS INTERESTED IT WILL SOON BE AVAILABLE ALSO A NEWLY REBUILT ATOMIC 4 THAT RUNS GREAT.

Andy, thought I was the only one that hated wheels enough to ditch it on a P35. Have talked with a machinist in Idaho, of all places, who has machined parts to convert a P35 to tiller steering. The parts consist of a bronze sleeve that fits over the square end of the rudder shaft and a plastic bearing that fills the hole in the thingypit sole where the emergency tiller plate is and supports the stub shaft. Might be cheaper to have him machine the parts in a group purchase if there are others out there that want to make the change to the logical way to steer a boat.
My thoughts are to have a conventional tiller facing forward to manually steer and a small stub tiller facing aft for the self steering vane and 'one armed bandit' tiller Auto Pilot to connect to. That way you keep the control lines/devices as much out of the thingypit as possible.
The other way to convert to tiller is rebuild the rudder with a new shaft that is long enough to extend up into the thingypit and attach the tiller to that. That's a stronger, more water tight solution but also big bucks unless you do it yourself. The advantage of the longer shaft is that you can glass a tube between the hull and thingypit floor so you don't need a packing gland to keep the water out. It's a much better way to do the job but quite a lot of work.
Email me, I'd like to discuss the conversion further. Address is roverhi at yahoo dot com. Remove the spaces and add the proper symbols.
Incidentally, my boat is in Alameda, SF Bay area.
